RE: Protect our Bill of Rights--DO NOT support the "VICTORY Act"

Dear Senator ,

I strongly urge you NOT to co-sponsor or support legislation known as the VICTORY Act (Vital Interdiction of Criminal Terrorist Organizations Act). This legislation has not been introduced yet, and should never be introduced. It is nothing more than an attempt to enact "PATRIOT II" provisions that will further infringe upon our civil liberties--not make Americans safer.

Drafts of the bill reveal that under the guise of terrorism defense, the Act will merely work to undo important federal asset forfeiture reforms and make it easier for the government to spy on citizens without the checks and balances needed to prevent abuse. The Bush Administration has not even presented evidence to Congress and the American people showing that the vast powers given to the federal government by the PATRIOT Act have prevented terrorism. To the contrary, a report by internal investigators at the Justice Department allegedly identifies dozens of cases where crimes unrelated to terrorism have been investigated and prosecuted under the PATRIOT Act. During many of these cases Justice Department employees have been accused of committing serious civil rights violations. It is simply irresponsible to support legislation that would advocate an expansion of these abuses.

Please do NOT co-sponsor or support the VICTORY ACT or similar legislation that expands the PATRIOT Act or otherwise curtails our freedom.

Most Sincerely,
