Senator RE: Take action to prevent serious chemical threats-Support S. 157 Dear Senator , I urge you to co-sponsor and support S. 157, which would constitute a very important first step to ridding our country of the dangers posed by chemical facilities across the country. The bill would require the EPA to prioritize the preparation of prevention plans for the worst chemical threats, such as those facilities that threaten 1 million or more people in the event of a toxic release. Senator Corzine introduced this bill again this year after it was defeated last year under heavy lobbying pressure from the chemical industry. This legislation is needed now more than ever since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Homeland Security Department was created without addressing the vulnerability of U.S. chemical plants to terrorism. The production, storage and transport of chemicals pose one of the most serious threats to communities across the country. Do not let the chemical industry lead you to believe that their facilities are safe. Over 100 chemical facilities each put one million or more people at risk if there were an accident or an attack. And using more fences, guards or alarms won't prevent attacks. Only using safer alternatives, which are available for many dangerous chemicals, will make a difference. Please support S. 157 with amendments to speed up the timeline of 2 ½ years for facilities to prepare prevention plans and to address the transport of hazardous materials. Most Sincerely,
