RE: Protect children from toxic chemicals-Support AB 302

Dear Assembly Member ,

I urge you to support AB 302, which will protect children's health by reducing and eventually eliminating our exposure to PBDEs, which are harmful chemicals with the potential to impair children's intelligence and motor skills.

Learning disabilities and other developmental diseases are on the rise in California, creating an increasing emotional and financial burden on our society. At the same time, levels of PBDEs found in Californians are some of the highest in the world and are rising exponentially. Scientists are discovering that PBDEs can disrupt the process of brain development in fetuses and infants. We must consider whether exposure to chemicals such as PBDEs are contributing to health problems in the state and take action to prevent future exposure.

Manufacturers of items like furniture and electronics commonly add PBDEs to plastics and other flammable materials to reduce the risk of fire. Thankfully, making a fire-safe product does not demand that we expose our families to developmental toxics. Many companies, especially those in the electronics industry, have already begun to phase out their use.

Given the magnitude of the threat to children's health, the rapidly increasing levels of exposure and the availability of alternatives, we should act immediately to end our exposure to PBDEs. By making intelligent decisions about what chemicals we allow into the environment, we can prevent unnecessary exposures with serious health consequences.

Please support AB 302.

Most Sincerely,
