RE: Vital changes needed in U.S. foreign policy!

Dear Senator ,

The Bush Administration's foreign policy is wreaking havoc worldwide and undermining the interests of our nation and its citizens. It must be changed. For the sake of the future of America, I urge you to dedicate yourself to moving our nation toward a sane and effective foreign policy.

The U.S. is threatening non-nuclear nations with a policy of first-strike attack, pursuing a new generation of nuclear weapons, and spending billions to develop the next phase of Star Wars (“missile defense”). U.S. military aid is going to a long list of human rights-abusing nations, from Indonesia to Tajikistan, while we deploy troops in 81 percent of the world’s nations. And in just three years the Bush Administration has withdrawn from the ABM treaty, undercut the Biological Weapons Convention, walked out on the UN Conference on Racism, and violated international law with a preemptive attack on Iraq.

These policies are provoking nuclear proliferation and anti-American sentiment around the world. They betray American values and are destabilizing the world community. And the massive expenses have plunged our nation into unprecedented deficits and impoverished our people, draining desperately needed funds away from education, environmental protection, health care, and national security.

True security will only come from policies that promote nuclear nonproliferation, control international arms sales and support international security and cooperation. The Pledge for a New American Foreign Policy makes a commitment to implementing a U.S. foreign policy that genuinely supports human rights and democracy worldwide, reduces the threat from weapons of mass destruction, and cooperates with the international community to accomplish these goals. Despite the rhetoric of the Bush Administration, our present foreign policy undermines these goals at every turn. I urge you to demonstrate your commitment to a foreign policy that will lead to security, stability and survival for Americans and the world with by signing this Pledge (enclosed) and by dedicating all of your resources to seeing it become a reality.
