RE: Please protect Myanmar's ancient forests

Dear General Khin Nyunt,

I join millions of concerned citizens around the world in asking you to protect the ancient forests of northern Myanmar's Kachin State, especially in the N'Mai Hku region. At present, logging and mining operations are a great danger to those forests.

The N'Mai Hku region is a watershed area for the rest of Myanmar, and disastrous flooding is a threat to the entire nation. Logging of the northern forests causes river flooding and tremendous habitat destruction. Mining causes extremely harmful mercury pollution as well as riverbank erosion.

The highly biodiverse N'Mai Hku region of Kachin State is the habitat of many rare species of animals and plants, including medicinal plants which must be protected. Unchecked logging and mining will destroy these priceless treasures forever.

Forest preservation is needed for Myanmar's future and as Myanmar's contribution to the world. I urge you to immediately end the logging and mining concessions in the forests of northern Myanmar.
