RE: Chalillo hydro-electric dam

Dear Fortis Board of Directors,

I am very deeply concerned about your planned construction of the Chalillo hydro-electric dam in the Macal River Valley in Belize. Although the Privy Council of London recently narrowly refused to halt the project, two judges on the court censured Fortis and the government of Belize for withholding critical information about the dam's foundations from the courts and the public. The judges further found that your company's claim that the dam would be built on granite was "seriously wrong."

Construction of the project on an unstable foundation would raise costs and could pose serious risks to downstream communities. Concern is also growing that hunting of rare and endangered wildlife is rampant among the hundreds of workers on the construction site.

You should immediately release to the public all information about the project, including all data on the project design and dam foundations. Fortis also should allow independent monitoring of any further construction activities to ensure that no illegal hunting of wildlife is occurring. In the best interest of the people of Belize and their environment, I urge you to cancel this entire project.
