RE: Support S. 1946 to investigate the flawed case for Iraq war

Dear Senator ,

I strongly urge you to cosponsor and actively support S. 1946--legislation that would set up an independent commission to investigate how the Bush administration built a case for war in Iraq based on flawed intelligence. We must do all that is necessary to protect American credibility at home and abroad by assessing what role the intelligence community and the Bush administration played in this intelligence breakdown.

The Bush administration’s case for a war in Iraq was largely based on the imminent threat its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) posed to our country. However, we now know that much of this information was highly flawed and even completely false. Moreover, former U.S. weapons inspector David Kay told the Senate and the press that he didn't believe Iraqi WMD existed.

As an American citizen, I have the right to know how my government used intelligence to justify a war. I would be ashamed to learn that this administration misled the American public, and I fear that we will lose international support if we continue down this path of deception.

For the sake of our democracy and the integrity of our nation, it is urgent that you help hold our government accountable on behalf of the American public by cosponsoring S. 1946. I also urge you to speak out publicly in support of an independent and thorough investigation into the government’s handling of intelligence information on Iraq. Any investigation should include hearings open to the public with testimony from government and outside witnesses and any published reports should be unclassified for the American public.

I will join millions of Americans in continuing to monitor this situation and to demand full accountability from the Administration.
