RE: Pay Alaska cleanup damages NOW and stop your frivolous attack on Greenpeace

Dear Mr. Raymond,

I am writing on the 15th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound, to demand that your company use its resources to clean up its mess in Alaska instead of appealing court orders to pay the damage claim and instead of pursuing unwarranted legal claims against Greenpeace.

As you are aware, the 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled by the Valdez covered 1,300 miles of Alaska's coast, much of which remains heavily polluted today. In 1994, ExxonMobil was ordered to pay $5 billion in damages to be divided among 34,000 fishermen and Alaskans whose livelihood and property were severely damaged by the spill. Since the original verdict, ExxonMobil has been appealing the decision to avoid paying the damage claim.

In May of 2003, activists supporting Greenpeace's campaign against global warming peacefully entered ExxonMobil corporate headquarters to protest your company’s unwillingness to take action to curb global warming. Following this event, rather than engaging in a dialogue to address the problems caused by your company's actions, ExxonMobil instituted a heavy-handed lawsuit to restrain Greenpeace’s and the activist’s exercise of their rights of free speech guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

It's time to take responsibility for your mistakes, pay what you owe to the Alaskan people and also to support the mandatory reductions in CO2 pollution needed to stop global warming. The whole world would welcome ExxonMobil as a more responsible corporate citizen, prepared to build a clean energy future and curb climate change.
