RE: Support funding and legislation to clean up American drinking water!

Dear Senator ,

I am concerned and disturbed about the safety and quality of tap water across America. Many cities and small towns across the nation have serious contamination problems with their drinking water. Common contaminants include cancer-causing agents like arsenic and radioactive radon, toxic chemicals like the rocket fuel perchlorate and lead, hazardous pesticides like atrazine, and germs that can cause disease.

Aging and outdated water utilities and pollution from sewage, industrial chemicals, and agricultural runoff are worsening contamination problems. Instead of acting decisively to deal with this serious problem, the Bush administration has proposed weakening Clean Water Act provisions that help protect our nation's drinking water supplies!

I therefore urge you to vigorously support strong water infrastructure legislation and more federal funding to clean up our drinking water sources. Please also support the Clean Water Authority Restoration Act (S. 473), which would ensure Clean Water Act protections for all waterways within congressional authority. Additionally, I urge you to press the Bush administration and the EPA to abandon their plans to weaken Clean Water Act coverage and rules, and to adopt strict standards for common contaminants that are not well controlled today, such as the rocket fuel perchlorate, chlorination by-products, radioactive radon, the pesticide atrazine, and pathogens and other contaminants from aging pipes.
