Takao Saito, President RE: Don't dodge fuel economy rules! Dear Mr. Saito, Subaru has worked hard for years to build a reputation as a responsible company that makes capable, safe, comfortable cars. Until now, you've also given millions of Americans safer, cleaner, more efficient alternatives to gas-guzzling SUVs and other trucks. That is why I am so disappointed and outraged that Subaru has decided to dodge federal fuel economy rules by reclassifying 2005 Outbacks as "light trucks," which are subject to much weaker mileage standards than regular automobiles. Subaru's action sets a terrible precedent. Lower mileage means more trips to the gas pump for drivers, and more pollution in our communities. I was also disappointed to learn that with all of Subaru's talent and technology, the average fuel economy of your cars has been dropping since the 2000 model year. I'd like to think that Subaru is a more responsible company, one that will live up to the excellent reputation you worked so hard to build. I strongly urge you to reconsider your decision to reclassify the Outback as a truck, and to reverse the slide that's already taken place in Subaru's fuel economy performance. Most Sincerely,
