RE: ExxonMobil should turn down the extra tax breaks and subsidies!

Dear Mr. Raymond,

I urge ExxonMobil to decline the tax breaks and subsidies offered to the oil industry by the federal government, including tax breaks from the energy bill passed by Congress in August 2005.

In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, our nation is facing many challenges. One of the challenges facing the Bush Administration and Congress is how to pay for the desperately-needed but costly rebuilding efforts underway along America's Gulf Coast.

Many members of Congress have already offered to cancel road building and other projects earmarked for their districts in order to fund hurricane relief projects. This fall, your company donated $3 million to the Hurricane Katrina and Rita relief efforts. In the same spirit, ExxonMobil should refuse to accept the billions in federal tax breaks and subsidies for the oil industry.

ExxonMobil clearly needs no support from the federal government. Your company made $25 billion in profit in 2004, and is on pace to surpass that amount in 2005.

Under current law, the oil and gas industry stands to gain $10.7 billion in tax breaks between 2005 and 2009. It simply does not make sense--especially in the wake of two major hurricanes--for taxpayers to subsidize an immensely profitable multi-billion dollar industry while Congress is considering significant cuts to important domestic programs to fund hurricane relief, including slashing programs for the most needy.

I urge ExxonMobil to act as a responsible corporate citizen and to immediately and publicly decline the billions in tax breaks and subsidies for the oil and gas industry authorized by current law. I will join many millions of American taxpayers and consumers in very closely following your actions in this extremely vital matter.

Most Sincerely,
