RE: Moratorium needed on CAFOs!

Dear Representative ,

I strongly urge you to pass a moratorium on new confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) or expansion of existing facilities. CAFOs house thousands of pigs, chickens, cattle, or turkeys under one roof, and prioritize high volume and quick growth, with minimal regard for human health, food safety, the environment, humane treatment of animals, and the rural economy.

The public health impacts of these facilities include toxic air emissions, water pollution, and the abuse of antibiotics. These impacts have been recognized not only by the communities forced to live with these facilities, but also by public health officials. The American Public Health Association has called for a moratorium on new CAFOs.

CAFOs are bad for consumers, for the environment, and for family farmers. Federal oversight of this industry has been weak, and at the state level the CAFO industry has been attacking the right of local communities to even regulate these facilities. It is time for Congress to fulfill its responsibility to protect the American people by reining in this type of industrialized animal production.

Please act immediately to initiate and pass legislation that will establish a moratorium on new CAFOs and on the expansion of existing CAFOs.

Most Sincerely,

copy to:
