RE: JPMorgan Chase's support for illegal logging in Indonesia

Dear Mr. Harrison,

I am extremely disturbed by JPMorgan Chase’s financial support of BlueLinx Holdings, Inc., the largest wood distributor in the U.S. and also a major importer of undocumented tropical timber from Indonesia. This investment by your company is sadly typical of your blatant disregard for the environment and human rights.

Illegal logging in Indonesia fuels a wide array of ecological and social problems and has been recognized in the international community as a growing threat to stability in the region. It is a disgrace that JPMorgan is profiting off such activity.

As you must know, Indonesia’s lowland rainforests are disappearing at an alarming rate. These forests are some of the most bio-diverse on Earth, and are home to a variety of threatened and endangered species, including the rare Indonesian orangutan. Indonesia’s forests also provide food and livelihood for at least 50 million indigenous people who call these forests home.

However, experts warn that if logging continues at current rates, all of Indonesia's old growth forests could be gone within 15 years. The vast majority of logging in the country is illegal, and although corruption and collusion with the military and police forces is rampant, BlueLinx continues to purchase wood from the region.

With the financial support of JPMorgan Chase, BlueLinx is importing Indonesian forest products of undocumented or unknown origin from highly sensitive forest ecosystems and selling them to a wide range of manufacturers and retailers across the country.

I urge you to closely examine your company's relationship to BlueLinx and to immediately end all investments in companies that engage in illegal logging or import illegally logged wood

I will join millions of concerned citizens around the world in closely monitoring your actions in this vital matter.

Most Sincerely,
