Senator RE: Non-Proliferation TreatyDear Senator , Nuclear weapons represent one of the gravest threats facing the U.S. and the world today. I strongly urge you to take immediate action to ensure that the United States supports and strengthens key measures of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which is the subject of an international review conference attended by over 150 governments this month in New York. These include:
The NPT was built on a basic bargain: the non-nuclear weapons states agreed to forego developing or otherwise acquiring nuclear weapons in exchange for a commitment on the part of the nuclear weapons states to end the nuclear arms race at an early date and to engage in “good faith” negotiations to achieve nuclear disarmament. For the treaty to succeed in its purpose, both sides of the bargain must be fulfilled. In order to strengthen the NPT, we must build a stronger and more equitable nonproliferation and disarmament regime on a global scale. With a few notable exceptions, the non-nuclear weapons states have kept their end of the bargain. However the nuclear weapons states, particularly the United States, have not shown much willingness to fulfill their disarmament commitments. Both sides of the bargain are equally important and mutually reinforcing. Preventing nuclear proliferation cannot be guaranteed without nuclear disarmament, and nuclear disarmament cannot succeed without preventing nuclear proliferation. Please demand and do whatever it takes to ensure that our nation supports and strengthens the NPT and fully complies with all its provisions. Most Sincerely,
