Senator RE: Clean Water Authority Restoration Act of 2005Dear Senator , I urge you to become a cosponsor of The Clean Water Authority Restoration Act of 2005 (S. 912). This important bill would reaffirm the primary objective of the Clean Water Act--protecting all of our nation's waters. Due to an EPA and US Army Corps January 2003 policy directive, Clean Water Act safeguards for millions of acres of wetlands, streams, ponds, lakes, and other water bodies are not being enforced by federal agencies. This has serious consequences for communities across the nation that rely on clean water for recreational purposes, safe drinking water, flood control, fishing, wildlife habitat, and other uses. For more than three decades, the Clean Water Act has played a critical role in preserving, maintaining, and restoring the health and safety of our nation's waters. But until the January 2003 policy directive is rescinded or overturned by Congress, many of our waters will be seriously at-risk from pollution and destruction. The degradation and destruction of even small streams, wetlands, and ponds will greatly affect larger bodies of water and pose significant threats to human and environmental health. Please take immediate action to protect our waters and restore long-standing, critical safeguards that have been in place for decades by cosponsoring the Clean Water Authority Restoration Act and actively working for its passage. Most Sincerely,
