RE: Yasuni National Park

Dear President Palacio,

I am very concerned at the prospect of environmental degradation in the Yasuni National Park and in the Huaorani traditonal territory.

Yasuni is home to the Huaorani people and to one of the world's most diverse collection of species. Petrobras' proposed oil development in the Yasuni National Park would further fragement Huaorani land through the building of roads and has the potential to destroy this fragile ecosystem through drilling and the creation of pipelines. Petrobras is moving forward with its development of the Yasuni reserve despite the resistance of the local Huaorani people, whose way of life is being severely threatened.

I urge you to take immediate action to protect this valuable and irreplaceable national treasure and to meet the demands of the Huaorani people by:

  • Instituting a 10-year moratorium on oil development in Huaorani territory and Yasuni National Park.
  • Requiring the withdrawal of the Brazilian national oil company, Petrobras, from Huaorani territory and Yasuni National Park.
  • Arranging a meeting between the Huaorani poeple and the International Monetary Fund as well as the World Bank.
  • Conducting a transparent audit of oil impacts in Huaorani territory.

Please protect the ancestral rights of the Huaorani in the Yasuni National Park and the many unique wildlife species native to this area. I will join millions of concerned citizens in Ecuador and around the world in closely following your actions in this vital matter.

Most Sincerely,
