RE: Urgent action needed to stop energy company price gouging

Dear Representative ,

The unprecedented profits of ExxonMobil and other large energy companies in the wake of the Katrina disaster and skyrocketing energy prices starkly illuminate a cynical, greedy and unacceptable corporate strategy that is hurting the most vulnerable Americans and damaging our economy and national security. I strongly urge you to take swift and decisive action to stop energy company price gouging and to protect Americans from future abuses. The Congress must act immediately to:

  • Implement a windfall profits tax and close loopholes allowing oil companies to escape paying adequate royalties.
  • Launch an immediate investigation, including the use of subpoena, into uncompetitive practices by oil companies.
  • Strengthen anti-trust laws by empowering the Federal Trade Commission to crack down on unilateral withholding of supplies and other non-collusive anti-competitive actions by oil companies.
  • Re-regulate energy trading exchanges to restore transparency.
  • Improve fuel economy standards to reduce demand.

Please work with your colleagues to take immediate steps to implement these vital measures to protect America and our future from corporate greed. I will join millions of concerned Americans in closely following the response of Congress to this dangerous and urgent matter.

Most Sincerely,
