Representative RE: Support Vehicle and Fuel Choice for American Security Act (H.R. 4409)Dear Representative , Congress has not done nearly enough to reduce our growing oil dependence, which saps America’s economic strength, pollutes our environment and jeopardizes national security. I urge you to take an important step to remedy this serious problem by supporting and helping pass the "Vehicle and Fuel Choice for American Security Act" (H.R. 4409). It would require the White House and federal agencies to develop an action plan to reduce America's oil consumption by 2.5 million barrels of oil a day within a decade, and 10 million barrels a day by 2031. Current U.S. consumption stands at 20 million barrels a day. The bill also calls for fuel-economy standards for heavy-duty vehicles, loan guarantees for manufacturers of hybrids, and incentives for alternative-fuels development and mass-transit systems. Transportation accounts for two-thirds of our oil use and yet the average gas mileage of American vehicles has dropped to its lowest level since the 1980s. Instead of improving fuel economy performance and investing in technology to break our oil dependence, the recent energy bill passed by Congress was simply business as usual -- more subsidies and more giveaways to big energy companies. A national commitment to oil savings would enhance our security, help stop global warming and make our economy more competitive. H.R. 4409 would be a significant step in this direction. Please co-sponsor this important legislation and work to ensure its passage. Most Sincerely,
