RE: Support Package 2 for the Marine Life Protection Act
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
California needs a robust network of fully protected marine reserves to ensure that our state's offshore ecological treasures are preserved for future generations. As the State moves forward with evaluating alternatives for Marine Protected Area (MPA) networks to implement the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA), I urge you to choose the Collaborative MPA Proposal (Package 2), a network of Marine Protected Areas developed by a broad group of diverse interests including divers, scientists, educators, fishermen and conservationists.
Package 2 provides the highest level of protection to the most outstanding and biologically diverse areas of our coast, such as Aņo Nuevo, Point Sur and Piedras Blancas. Adoption of Package 2's network of Marine Protected Areas will also help ensure productive populations of a wide variety of fish species, and ensure lasting benefits for all coastal users.
If the state does not act, we risk serious and lasting damage to our fish and underwater wildlife and our coastal economy. I urge you and your administration to do more than just the bare minimum. Please leave a true legacy for California by adopting Package 2, providing adequate funding and giving California's coastal waters real protection.
