RE: Stop nuclear proliferation by our own government!

Dear Representative ,

I am deeply concerned about the recent agreement by President Bush to assist India with its development of nuclear power and nuclear weapons. This deal sets a terrible precedent by rewarding India despite its refusal to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and its testing of a nuclear weapon as recently as 1998. I urge you to cosponsor H.Con.Res. 318, a bipartisan resolution expressing concern about the U.S.-India nuclear deal.

Before this agreement, India had the capacity to produce 6 to 10 nuclear weapons per year. If this deal is implemented, India will potentially be able to produce nearly 50 nuclear weapons per year.

The U.S.-India nuclear deal harms proliferation efforts because:

• It undermines the nuclear nonproliferation regime.
• It creates incentives for withdrawing from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and creates a double standard. The U.S. is pressuring Iran (an NPT member) not to develop its nuclear program while at the same time attempting to supply India (a non-NPT member) with nuclear technology.
• The U.S. could be supplying India technology that directly allows India to produce weapons-grade material, since its civilian and military nuclear programs are not separated.
• It could strain relations between India and Pakistan, and is very likely to motivate Pakistan to seek a similar deal with the U.S. or China.

Please support H.Con.Res. 318, and please do everything in your power to work with your colleagues in Congress to block this extremely ill-advised deal.
