RE: Prevent construction of permanent military bases in Iraq

Dear Representative ,

I very strongly urge you to co-sponsor H.CON.RES.197, which prevents the construction of permanent military bases in Iraq. Our continued presence in Iraq fuels the insurgency and terrorists daily in Iraq and elsewhere, and the planned construction of numerous permanent military bases sends the message to Iraqis and all peoples of the Middle East that our avowed support of independent democracies is a smokescreen for our desire to control their governments and their resources.

Our persistent forays into Middle Eastern politics and our invasion of Iraq to instill American values into a misunderstood culture have done irreparable harm to the reputation of our great nation. Our young men and women are dying and being maimed every day, and our occupation of Iraq has led to horrible atrocities committed upon innocent Iraqi civilians, many of them women and children.

This disaster is compounded by the fact that billions of dollars from the reconstruction budget are being spent to build military bases instead of rebuilding the Iraqi infrastructure. Americans are supposedly sacrificing our own needs by spending hundreds of billions of dollars to help the Iraqi people rebuild--only to discover that the money is actually being used for military expansion into the Middle East. This serves neither the needs of the Iraqi people nor the American taxpayer.

We were led into this war under false pretenses. While we must be responsible for the damage we have done in Iraq, we need to exit Iraq as soon as humanly possible so the Iraqi people can rebuild their lives and build hope for the future. Permanent bases will only add to the conflict, fuel terrorism and the insurgency, and create a huge financial drain on the American taxpayer and on our nation’s future. Please take a stand on behalf of American values by supporting H.CON.RES.197.

Most Sincerely,
