Mr. C. John Wilder, CEO RE: Coal power plantsDear Mr. Wilder, I strongly urge you to halt your plans to build 11 new pulverized-coal power plants in Texas. These new plants would emit 78 million tons of CO2 pollution per year—more carbon dioxide annually than 21 different states, and equal to the annual emissions of 14 million average passenger cars. Efforts to reduce CO2 pollution in more than 28 states would be more than nullified by your company's actions. Texas is the nation's largest carbon dioxide polluter and TXU's plans will make this dramatically worse. While many fight to clean the air we breathe, TXU will not only endanger the health of Texans, but also negatively impact the lives of people the world over. By building these plants, you will undermine the efforts of other states across the nation to reduce carbon emissions and fight global warming. Of grave concern, too, is the effect on air quality and public health from increased mercury, smog- and soot-forming pollution (nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide). You have proclaimed that TXU will make "voluntary" reductions from its existing plants in Texas to offset the additional emissions. But recent new rules under the Clean Air Act mandate significant cuts in these smog- and soot-forming pollutants as well as toxic mercury in existing power plants. Federal air quality regulations call for reductions that are roughly equal to those you say you will make for NOx and SO2, but require even more for mercury. You are trying to take credit for changes the law requires you to make, with or without new plants. People across Texas and across America do not want more pollution and acceleration of climate change. They do not want energy companies to seek to maximize profits at the expense of the health and security of their families. Please immediately cancel your plans to build these plants and instead develop affordable, available technology to reduce TXU's contribution to the global warming crisis. I will join millions of concerned citizens across our nation in closely monitoring your actions in this vital matter. Most Sincerely,
