President Michelle Bachelet RE: Endesa-Spain hydroelectric projectDear President Bachelet, I urge you to take immediate action to stop Endesa-Spain's plans to build several massive hydroelectric dams on half a dozen rivers in the heart of Chilean Patagonia. Not only do the proposed dams make little economic sense, they would destroy the vast wilderness and rivers of Patagonia. The hydroelectric dams would flood thousands of acres of precious wildlife habitat, while their transmission lines would cut across five national parks and two wilderness areas. Rather than building massive dams to supply energy to industries thousands of miles away, Chile should consider real measures for energy efficiency and local, renewable energy production. I join millions of concerned citizens in Chile and around the world in asking you to uphold your pledge to make environmental protection a priority, by stopping this ill-conceived project before it does irreparable damage to the unique and irreplaceable wilderness of your beautiful country. Sincerely,
