RE: My comments on Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2006-0735 (Lead Standards)

Dear Mr. Johnson,

As a concerned American, I appreciate your accepting my comments on this extremely vital matter. I strongly urge you to reject any proposal to eliminate the federal lead pollution standard.

Lead is one of the most harmful toxins on Earth, and is especially hazardous for children. A federal lead pollution standard has been extremely successful in protecting the air we breathe and the health of American families. As you know, ingestion or inhalation of even low levels of lead poses severe risks to humans. Lead poisoning damages the major organs and causes osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, anemia, memory problems, and seizures.

Children are at the greatest risk, as low levels of lead can cause lowered IQ levels and learning deficits.

The EPA proposal to remove lead from monitoring and control under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards is misguided and will greatly harm public health. While we have made progress in curbing lead pollution, significant air emission sources remain. We must continue to use the best available science to guide decisions regarding effective pollution monitoring and acceptable pollution levels.

Please do NOT eliminate or weaken the lead standard! Furthermore, the EPA must fulfill its obligation under the Clean Air Act to protect American health and safety by allowing the best available science to guide the agency's decisions.

Most Sincerely,
