Scott Schliebe, Polar Bear Project Leader RE: Protect Polar Bears under ESA!Dear Mr. Schliebe, I strongly support your proposal to list the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act due to the melting of its Arctic sea-ice habitat. The scientific evidence that polar bears are threatened with extinction from global warming is overwhelming. The polar bear's Arctic sea-ice habitat could disappear completely in the summer by the year 2040. Tragically, polar bear populations are already declining, fewer cubs are surviving, and individual bears are drowning and starving to death. I am therefore very concerned that your proposal does not identify greenhouse gas pollution as the cause of rising Arctic temperatures and vanishing sea ice. Our government's failure to curb greenhouse gas pollution is a primary cause of the polar bear's melting habitat. The Endangered Species Act is designed to identify, and then address, the threats to a species. It is not too late to give polar bears back their future, but we must act quickly to reduce greenhouse gas pollution and slow global warming. I urge that you immediately finalize the listing of the polar bear, identify greenhouse gas pollution as the primary threat to its continued existence, and designate its critical habitat. Most Sincerely,
